Rugby Champions

Winning the NSWPSSA Rugby League State Knockout competition is a tremendous achievement for all involved. To be declared the best team in NSW has made not just the coaching staff and players proud, but the wider school community too. The boys were extremely excited to showcase their talent to the students and spectators that came along to support. Notably, it was an absolute pleasure to have Mr Sankey and his daughter in the stands watching the match. All of us here at NVPS know how passionate Mrs Sankey was about sport and just how proud she would have been of the boys involved.

After winning away games against Batemans Bay PS and South Wagga PS in the quarter and semi-final the whole school had a sense of excitement as the team prepared for the grand final against Scone PS. With the game being played at Campbelltown Stadium we were fortunate enough to take 200 students to the match to support the boys.
The boys were excited and knew they were only 40 minutes away from being the first Narellan Vale PS team in its 20 year history to be declared state champions. Scone PS were always going to be a tough team after conceding only 12 points in their 8 matches on their journey to the grand final.

The boys started the match with purpose and knew a strong start was key. They dominated the opening minutes of play and soon after scored a try on the left edge through Joel B. The try was converted by Malaki S. They took a 6-0 lead to half time. Mid way through the second half James F crossed the line to extend the lead and the try was successfully converted by Jay T taking the score to 12-0. Scone managed to cross the line late in the match but the siren went soon after and Narellan Vale PS team was declared state champions with a 12-4 win. Malaki S was declared Narellan Vale PS's man of the match.

The school is proud of the sporting reputation it holds and values the importance of developing the whole child through providing opportunities like these.

Many of these students move on to various high schools next year but those that are in Year 5 look forward to the opportunity to defend their title. With talent coming through in younger grades, I look forward to the challenge in 2018. For those students who move to high school, we wish them every success in all aspects of life.

Norm Flegg and I have coached many of these boys over the last 4 years and it has been a pleasure to watch them become the quality players they are today. Without the assistance and support of the families our successes would not have been possible. A special mention also goes to our trainer Brett Williams.
